  4. This file provides information on how to update your copy of BBEdit 3.1
  5. to the current (3.1.1) maintenance release. This updater can only be used
  6. to update BBEdit 3.1.
  7.  
  8. •    NOTE: Since the updater application modifies your copy of BBEdit,
  9.     you should not use it on your original BBEdit distribution disks.
  10.     
  11.     This updater is for use only by owners of the commercial release of
  12.     BBEdit. It cannot be used to update a demo, beta, or freeware
  13.     version of BBEdit, or a version of BBEdit older than 3.1.
  14.     
  15. Packing List

  18. This updater package includes:
  19.  
  20.     -    “Update Instructions”: this document;
  21.     
  22.     -    “3.1.1 Release Notes”: information on what’s new and
  23.         improved in this version, as well as general information
  24.         that wasn’t included in the manual.
  25.         
  26.     -    “BBEdit 3.1 -> 3.1.1”: the application to update your copy of BBEdit.
  27.                 
  28.     -    “New Extensions”: a folder which contains additions to the
  29.         set of standard extensions included in the shipping BBEdit
  30.         package.
  31.             
  32.     -    “BBEdit 3.1 Help”: an updated version of the file
  33.         which contains the help balloons used in BBEdit.
  34.         (If you’re running under System 6, you can ignore this
  35.         file.)
  36.         
  37.     -    “BBEdit Power 3.1”: an updated version of BBEdit’s native
  38.         PowerPC code.
  39.         
  40. Installing the Update
  41. ---------- --- ------

  43. 0.    Make sure you’re using an unmodified, non-beta, non-demo copy of
  44.     BBEdit 3.1. If necessary, make a new copy from your original
  45.     distribution disk or CD.
  46.     
  47. 1.    Double-click on the “BBEdit 3.1->3.1.1” application.
  48.  
  49. 2.    A dialog will come up, asking you to designate the copy of BBEdit
  50.     you’d like to update. Select your old copy of BBEdit, and click 
  51.     the “Update” button.
  52.     
  53. 3.    The updater will complete its operation automatically. The update will
  54.     take a minute or so to apply, and near the end of the process,
  55.     there will be a significant delay as the updater completes its
  56.     work. This delay is normal, and there is no cause for alarm.
  57.  
  58.     When the updater has finished running, your old version of
  59.     BBEdit will be named "Old BBEdit". Drag this file to the Trash,
  60.     and empty the trash.
  61.     
  62.     After updating BBEdit and removing the old version, we recommend
  63.     that you rebuild your desktop. If you do not, you may experience
  64.     difficulty in dragging items to BBEdit’s icon (or to an alias to
  65.     BBEdit). As an alternative, you can use “Save a BNDL” or a similar
  66.     utility to update BBEdit’s entry in the desktop database.
  67.     
  68. 4.     Drag the contents of the “New Extensions” folder
  69.     into your BBEdit Extensions folder, if you have one. If you’re
  70.     not using any extensions, you can skip this step.
  71.     
  72. 5.    If you’re using a Power Macintosh, replace the “BBEdit Power 3.1”
  73.     file with the updated version from this update package. (The
  74.     BBEdit Power file should reside in the same folder as the BBEdit
  75.     application.)
  76.     
  77. 6.    Read the “What’s New in BBEdit 3.1.1” file for information on
  78.     what’s new and improved in this maintenance version.
  79.
